Interconnected Disaster Risks report Lead Author, Caitlyn Eberle, was interviewed by TVMonaco for an evening news report on global groundwater depletion.
Groundwater depletion is a crisis we cannot see. Currently, 21 of 37 aquifers around the world are being depleted faster than they can be replenished. Over 2 billion people worldwide rely on groundwater for drinking water, and 70 per cent of withdrawals are used for agriculture.
The water in aquifers has accumulated over thousands of years and takes as much time to recharge, making it essentially a non-renewable resource. The 2023 Interconnected Disaster Risks report includes the groundwater depletion crisis among five "risk tipping points" humanity is approaching.
“If we are not able to pump water out because water levels are dropping, we will not be able to support our agriculture systems anymore, which can lead to all of the things you can imagine with a food system collapse”, Eberle warned in the interview.
UNU-INWEH’s Kaveh Madani, author of the recent Global Water Bankruptcy report, was also interviewed. He encouraged countries to come together to tackle this urgent crisis.
