UNU-INWEH Strategic Plan

The UNU-INWEH Strategic Plan 2025–2029 sets out the Institute’s approach to addressing interconnected global challenges related to water, the environment, health, climate change and human security. It provides a framework for strengthening UNU-INWEH’s research, education, capacity development, partnerships and policy impact, with particular attention to the Global South and marginalized communities.

Aligned with the United Nations University Strategic Plan 2025–2029, the plan is built around three institutional priorities:

  1. Strengthening capacity for policy-relevant research and education.
  2. Expanding partnerships and collaboration, particularly in the Global South.
  3. Increasing UNU’s presence, visibility and tangible impact worldwide.

UNU-INWEH will implement the plan through five interconnected thematic programmes:

  1. Governance, Security and Justice
  2. Water, Energy and Critical Minerals
  3. Food, Land and Biodiversity
  4. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Health and Gender
  5. Geospatial, Climate and Infrastructure Analytics

Across these areas, the Institute will advance evidence-based research, policy innovation, education and knowledge sharing while strengthening collaboration with UN entities, governments, academia, civil society, the private sector and vulnerable communities. The plan also establishes an institutional results framework and performance indicators for monitoring UNU-INWEH’s progress and impact through 2029.
