On 1 March 2025, UNU-IAS co-organized the third in a series of events exploring disaster recovery efforts and local sustainability initiatives in Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
Tsunao Watanabe (UNU-IAS OUIK) introduced the Satoyama and Satoumi of Noto Peninsula — dynamic mosaics of landscapes and seascapes where harmonious interactions between people and nature maintain biodiversity while supporting human livelihoods, survival and well-being in a sustainable manner. He mentioned that an international symposium on the theme Supporting the Recovery of Noto Peninsula: Building Disaster-resilient Communities will be held on 20 March 2025.
A panel discussion moderated by Yuko Oyama (Global Environment Outreach Centre) featured Kiyomi Amaike (Noto Town Fureai Corporation), Chizuru Uesaka (Yonekichi Farm) and Katsuyoshi Shuden (Tome Dream Talk Association) — agricultural practitioners from Noto Peninsula. Panelists shared insights on the satoyama and satoumi approach to agricultural production, the impact of natural disasters on livelihoods, local community engagement and recovery.
The event was co-organized by UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa and the Global Environment Outreach Centre.
