The Interconnected Disaster Risks report by UNU-EHS was featured in a news story aired on China's Central Television. The report's most recent edition, 'Turning Over a New Leaf', was specifically in focus for its recognition of the root causes to disasters and its call for deep systemic changes to society in the face of increasing climate and environmental risks.
UNU-EHS Director and UNU-VIE Vice Rector in Europe, Prof. Dr. Shen Xiaomeng, was interviewed for the story. “Science has clearly pointed out the various risks we face, such as climate change, and how we can effectively mitigate these risks. But we are not doing enough, and we can't help but ask why we are not doing what it takes”, she said. The report recommends five changes that humanity can make to adapt and improve our systems to achieve a more sustainable world. The five changes are: Realign with nature, Rethink waste, Reconsider responsibility, Reimagine the future and Redefine value.
It also highlights real-world practical examples of positive change from around the world that show transformative change is possible, because in many cases it is already underway. “The unique aspect of this report is that it first presents a positive narrative and focuses on the root causes, thereby finding the source from which we can truly address these risks”, she stated in the interview.
