Nidhi Nagabhatla provided insight into the environmental implications of the 2026 Hormuz attacks.

UNU-CRIS Senior Research Fellow, Nidhi Nagabhatla, was recently featured on a TRT World segment titled “War on Iran Sparks Fears of Environmental Disaster,” highlighting growing concerns over the ecological consequences of escalating tensions in the region.

Her comments are summarized below:

"The 2026 Hormuz attacks constitute a local ecocide—widespread, knowing destruction of marine ecosystems—multiple pollution incidents that are releasing toxic pollutants into the marine waters. The environmental gravity of the  crisis intensifies because released toxic legacies— heavy metals, explosive residues, and other particulates— will persist for decades to centuries in these fragile systems."
