Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of our era, with the potential to revolutionize virtually every sector of society. From healthcare diagnostics to climate modelling, from educational personalization to logistics optimization, AI technologies are rapidly expanding human capabilities and reshaping how we address intricate challenges. As these technologies continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace, they present extraordinary opportunities to accelerate progress toward sustainable development and improve lives on a global scale.
However, the advancement of AI also brings significant ethical, governance and equity considerations that must be addressed. Ensuring that AI technologies are introduced and deployed in ways that are inclusive, transparent and beneficial requires deliberate coordination among diverse stakeholders including governments, industry leaders, academic researchers and civil society organizations.
The ‘AI for Good’ platform, established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), facilitates collaboration among governments, industry, academia and civil society to leverage AI towards social and environmental benefits, encompassing areas such as health, education, robotics, accessibility and communication networks. It endeavours to ensure that AI technologies are used in an ethical, inclusive and transparent manner to improve lives worldwide while addressing global challenges.
The proposal for a Flagship Report deriving from the AI for Good platform consolidates the immense volume of knowledge produced on the platform, identifying technical, ethical, and governance trends in AI, and informing AI for Good initiatives globally. This annual report, led by UNU-CPR, will be launched at the AI for Good Conference in Geneva, and targets Member States, industry leaders and other multilateral agencies.
