The United Nations University Institute in Macau (UNU Macau) recently hosted its 2026 Spring Reception, gathering partners from central government representatives, the Macao SAR Government, academic institutions, businesses, media, and community organizations. The event provided a platform to review the collaborative achievements of the past year and explore future directions for cooperation in digital technology and sustainable development.
In her address, Dr. Huang Jingbo, Director of UNU Macau, reflected on the significant milestones of 2025, a year marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 50th anniversary of UNU. Among the notable accomplishments were the successful hosting of the Milestone Series, which included the UNU Macau AI Conference 2025, the Global Youth AI Innovation Competition, and AI Education Day. These events attracted over 800 experts, youth innovators, and policymakers from more than 30 countries and regions, who explored how AI can contribute to an inclusive and sustainable digital future.
The Institute also made strides in strengthening international research collaboration and knowledge exchange, notably through the UNU Global AI Network. The network now includes 124 institutions from 36 countries, fostering cooperation in AI research, capacity building, and youth innovation. Furthermore, UNU Macau launched the first UNU Hub in Asia in collaboration with Lingnan University, advancing research and cooperation in humanitarian technology and sustainable development.
UNU Macau continued to offer specialized training in AI and digital governance for diplomats, government officials from Portuguese-speaking countries, and young scholars. Through winter and summer camps, as well as research training programs, the Institute has been working to cultivate youth leadership, enhance digital literacy, and foster interdisciplinary skills in the digital technology field.
Dr. Huang emphasized that these achievements were made possible through the support from the Macao SAR Government and the collaboration of various partners. This has highlighted Macao’s role as a platform for international exchange and technological cooperation, further strengthening the city’s position as a bridge connecting China, Portuguese-speaking countries, and the world.
Looking ahead, UNU Macau will continue to play its role as a United Nations think tank, advancing research, education, and capacity building in digital technology and sustainable development. The Institute plans to host an international AI Conference in Africa, promoting dialogue and collaboration between the Global South and other regions on artificial intelligence and digital technologies. In addition, UNU Macau will organize an AI & Education Conference, bringing together policymakers, educators, and technology experts to explore the application and governance of AI in education, with outcomes contributing to a policy-oriented white paper. The Institute will also establish a Youth Innovation Group, engaging young innovators in co-designing and implementing activities under the UNU Global AI Network, fostering international youth collaboration and innovation.
During the event, attendees engaged in discussions on AI, digital technologies, and the importance of nurturing youth talent. They commended the Institute’s progress over the past year and expressed their commitment to continuing collaboration, exploring new opportunities for digital technology to foster sustainable development.
