On February 28, 2025, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University (UNU) and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, met with Mr. Sam Hou Fai, the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), China. The meeting exchanged views on the exploration of emerging technologies and their applications, as well as potential collaborations to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.
Professor Marwala emphasized UNU’s dedication to harnessing research and innovation to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted the significant opportunities for collaboration in areas such as digital technology, environmental sustainability, and international cooperation, and reiterated UNU’s commitment to advancing these efforts through meaningful partnerships.
Mr. Sam outlined the Macao SAR Government's ongoing efforts to diversify its economy strategically, with a particular emphasis on integrating innovative technologies across various sectors. He noted that such advancements would play a crucial role in driving the high-quality development of key industries. Moreover, he pointed out that fostering the industrialization of innovative technologies would serve as a catalyst for Macao’s continued economic growth and global competitiveness.

Both leaders acknowledged Macao’s unique geographic and cultural positioning as a vital bridge connecting the world. They discussed opportunities for leveraging Macao’s strategic location, alongside the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, to foster collaborative efforts among multiple stakeholders, facilitating high-level innovation-driven partnerships.
This engagement represents a positive step toward strengthening global partnerships and supporting the collective goals of the United Nations.
