United Nations University Recognizes Four Ontario Youth for Environmental Leadership and Innovation

The 2026 Youth Champion Awards recognize young leaders advancing climate action, sustainable transportation and environmental innovation.

TORONTO, 28 October 2026 — Four young environmental leaders from across Ontario have been named recipients of the 2026 Youth Champion in Environmental Action & Awareness Award by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), in partnership with Waterfront Media Group and the International Peace Festival.

The awards were presented on 10 October at the 8th Annual International Peace Festival Gala, held at the Urban Economy Forum's World Urban Pavilion in Toronto under the theme Together for a Sustainable and Peaceful World.

Now in its second year, the award recognizes young people aged 15 to 24 living in Ontario who are demonstrating leadership and measurable impact in addressing climate, water and environmental challenges through research, innovation, advocacy and community engagement.

Selected by a UNU-INWEH Selection Committee from finalists across the province, the four recipients were evaluated based on their leadership, innovation, measurable impact and commitment to environmental action.

"Young people aren't waiting for permission. They understand, often more clearly than the rest of us, that our health, our economies and our futures depend on the environment, and they're stepping up to protect it," said Dr. Rohit Ramchandani, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships Officer at UNU-INWEH, who presented the awards.

"Our job is to make room for that leadership by giving them space, voice, audience and influence. When we do, systems change. These awards are one way we put that into practice."
