Five Reasons Climate And Clean Air Action Is An Investment, Not A Burden

The Economic, Health, and Development Case for Climate and Clean Air Action

Summary

Climate and clean air action is often treated as an economic burden, but a new UN report, Hidden Assets, shows that the greater cost may lie in inaction. Air pollution drives major health, productivity, and economic losses worldwide. The report finds that 25 climate and clean air measures could generate about $15 in benefits for every $1 invested and prevent 144 million premature deaths by 2050. Many solutions already exist; the bigger barriers are governance, finance, and implementation. With each year of delay potentially costing more than $1.5 trillion in forgone annual benefits, the case for action is increasingly economic as well as environmental. By 2050, the benefits could reach 4.5% of global GDP.

For years, climate and clean air policies have been framed as sacrifices societies must make to protect the environment.

The language is familiar. We hear about costs, burdens, trade-offs, and constraints. We are told that cleaner economies require difficult choices between development and sustainability.

But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme, Hidden Assets: The Economic and Health Case for Climate and Clean Air Action, suggests that the real economic burden is not climate and clean air action itself, but our continued failure to act.

Societies repeatedly underestimate the cost of inaction. Whether the issue is water scarcity, land degradation, or air pollution, delayed action is often justified as the cheaper option until the bill finally arrives.

The new UNEP report provides compelling evidence that the bill has already arrived. Why do we need to stop treating climate and clean air action as a cost?
