Dr. Mir Matin is the Manager of the Geospatial, Climate and Infrastructure Analytics Programme at UNU-INWEH, leading a team of scientists and academics using geospatial analysis, climate modeling, and advanced analytics to support evidence-based decision-making.  

He is an expert in applying earth observation and geoinformation application to mitigate environmental and climate risks and enhance socio-economic resilience. He has extensive experience implementing information services for water resources, hydroclimatic disaster risk reduction, agriculture, food security, and weather and climate services.

With over three decades of experience, he has held leadership roles at the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) in Bangladesh, the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka, and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal. He has managed research projects for flood and drought monitoring and early warning, land cover change monitoring, crop and agriculture monitoring and contributed to research and implementation projects in more than 10 countries.

His work at UNU-INWEH includes contribution to the strategic leadership of research programmes, coordinating capacity development activities, and managing the UNU-INWEH online learning platform. He also coordinates the management of UNU-INWEH’s ICT and communication platforms and serves as the Deputy Chair of the UNU-wide Sustainability Nexus Analytics, Informatics and Data (AID) Programme.

He holds a PhD in remote sensing and ecohydrology from the University of New Brunswick (Canada), an MBA in Digital Technology Management from Royal Roads University (Canada), an MSc in Geoinformatics from the University of Twente (the Netherlands), and an MSc in Mathematics from the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh).
