The sixty-fourth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SB 64) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB) in Bonn, Germany, from 08 to 18 June 2026.
As the global community gathers at SB64 in Bonn, this timely event brings attention to the often-overlooked intersection of conflict, environmental degradation, and climate change. Through a documentary screening and interactive discussion, participants will hear from researchers, youth leaders, storytellers, and frontline voices working at the nexus of environmental security and human well-being.
Dr. Nidhi Nagabhatla will reflect on Conflict, Climate, and Environmental Security: Connecting the Missing Dots. What happens to ecosystems, biodiversity, water resources, and public health when conflict disrupts entire regions? While climate change discussions often focus on emissions, adaptation, and resilience, the environmental consequences of conflict remain insufficiently recognized. Yet wars and armed conflicts can leave lasting scars on landscapes, destroy ecosystems, accelerate biodiversity loss, contaminate water sources, undermine food security, and create long-term public health challenges.
The collaboration to conduct this event together with partners provided an opportunity to explore how conflict and climate risks interact, amplify vulnerabilities, and shape the future of communities and ecosystems. The conversation aims to foster a more holistic understanding of climate action—one that recognizes peace, environmental stewardship, public health, and resilience as interconnected pillars of sustainable development.
The session reflected on these critical challenges and in advancing dialogue on pathways toward a more resilient, equitable, and environmentally secure future.
