Webinar: Biotechnology as an Essential Tool for Circular Economy and Development

UBA and ITAPROQ launch a webinar series on biotech tools to boost circular economy, linking academic research with sustainable industry practices.

UNU-BIOLAC recently hosted the webinar “Biotecnología como herramienta esencial de la economía circular y el desarrollo”, a four-session virtual event attended by over 100 participants. The initiative explored how biotechnology can drive sustainable industrial practices and strengthen circular economy models.

The lectures covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • Extending value chains by transforming waste into new products.
  • Biotechnological alternatives to replace unsustainable industrial inputs.
  • Development of new materials—especially bioplastics—from biological sources.
  • Reducing toxicity in industrial processes and implementing sustainable biological controls.
  • Improving food quality and sustainability through biotechnology, biocatalysts, biorefineries, and enzyme-based processes.
  •

Several sessions presented case studies, while others addressed the challenges of scaling these technologies to profitable levels, a critical step toward achieving a truly sustainable and circular economy.

This event aligns with UNU-BIOLAC’s mission to promote biotechnology as a driver of innovation and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to sponsorship and outreach, UNU-BIOLAC provided the technological platform that enabled this webinar to take place.

We invite institutions and professionals to explore opportunities for organizing similar academic activities with our support.
