High-tech Quality Control for High-tech Therapeutics

As therapeutics become more complex, assuring their safety and effectiveness requires more precise methods

Therapeutics have evolved from extracted molecules with modifications to designed protein-based nanobots produced by genetically modified cells that function as micro- and nanofactories.

But no matter how advanced the technology becomes, some cornerstones of the therapeutic agent developing and production process remain: Is the molecule pure enough? Was it correctly shaped by the cell for its function? Did we isolate the right product? How concentrated is the molecule in this sample?

These quality control questions are fundamental to answer for molecules that are expected to enter the body and react with it. The capacity to answer them is paramount to any therapeutic production program.

The course Production and Mass-Spectrometry-Based Quality Control of Biotherapeutics was held at Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology of Rosario during November and covered both theoretical and practical aspects of modern biologics production technologies, from development to quality control. We congratulate Dr. Germán Rosano Germán Rosano on this initiative, which brought together students from all over Latin America and teachers from around the world.
