About the Webinar
The ever-evolving Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is profoundly impacting people’s engagement with media and information. As it continues to evolve, what are implications of generative AI for us, how can we use it to empower ourselves, and what knowledge and skillsets are needed to address its challenges? To enhance people’s critical thinking and awareness on these issues, the United Nations University Institute in Macau (UNU Macau) will organize the webinar on the overarching theme of GAI & Media and Information Literacy on 25 October 2024.
As a part of the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 celebration events, the webinar aims to provide an open platform for the public, researchers, media practitioners and relevant stakeholders to exchange ideas and engage in insightful discussions. During the webinar, leading experts in the field of Media and Information Literacy will offer diverse insights.

Professor David Buckingham
“Implications of AI for media and media literacy education”
David Buckingham is an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Education, University College London, and an Emeritus Professor of Media and Communications at Loughborough University, UK. His work focuses on children’s and young people’s interactions with media, and on media education. He has published over 30 books and over 250 articles and book chapters in these areas. He has been a consultant for bodies such as UNESCO, the United Nations, UNICEF, the European Commission, Ofcom (the UK media regulator), and the UK government. Professor Zhang Kai
“AI will change the world, who will change AI?”
Director of Media Education Research Center at the Communication University of China. Her research expertise spans from media literacy to international communication and international news. She was a visiting scholar at the University of London. She has published over 30 articles and authored 7 books in related areas. She also led over 10 research projects focusing on youth development and Media & Information Literacy. Professor Divina Meigs
“Decoding algorithms: media and information for All”
Divina Frau-Meigs is professor of media sociology at Sorbonne Nouvelle University, France. She is a specialist of Media and Information Literacy, Cultural Diversity and Internet Governance. She is worldly renowned researcher in the media uses and practices of young people as well as information disorders (radicalization, disinformation, hate speech, etc.). She holds the UNESCO chair “Savoir Devenir in sustainable digital development: mastering information cultures” (2013--). Building Resilience through Media and Information Literacy User empowerment through Media and Information Literacy to the evolution of generative Artificial Intelligence (UNESCO, 2024).
