Precipitation is usually seen as the starting point of the hydrological cycle. Its volume and distribution in space and time set the stage for other hydrological processes. Measuring rain involves many aspects, and different techniques may be more or less appropriate depending on the purpose and circumstances.
In this Science Talk, Dr. Rolf Larsson will discuss different techniques for measuring rainfall and their applicability in different contexts, with a particular focus on bias and urban applications. The talk draws on work conducted by colleagues at Lund University, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, and water utilities in the Swedish cities of Trelleborg and Göteborg. The discussion will highlight challenges in rainfall measurement and the importance of selecting appropriate methods for understanding precipitation in urban environments.
