UNU-IAS contributes to the implementation of the research project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan entitled “Ensuring Security in Japan and the Indo-Pacific under Climate Change: A Focus on the Linkages with Economic Security” (FY2026-2028). UNU-IAS will be responsible for implementing Theme 4 of the project, “Research on Trends in International Climate Security Rulemaking.” This project is led by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and joined by Kyoto University.
We investigate the current state of international rule-making on climate security, with a focus on the Paris Agreement, the UN Security Council and the free-trade regime. The research provides practical input and recommendations for enhancing international and regional cooperation on climate change amid geopolitical fragmentation, drawing on the findings and insights gained.
