The Satoyama and Satoumi of Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan are a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). Built on traditional knowledge and maintained by local communities, they are landscapes and seascapes where humans and nature coexist in harmony, sustaining livelihoods and preserving biodiversity. This year, Noto Peninsula has suffered significant damage due to earthquakes and heavy rainfall.

UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa will organize an event featuring Kenji Kamitani, a traditional salt producer from Okunoto Salt Village in Suzu City, and Fumiko Tori from the Japanese confectioner Kagetsu in Nanao City. They will share insights on the 2024 Noto Earthquake recovery, as well as their experiences living and working in the region. Sayako Koyama (Research Associate, UNU-IAS OUIK) will moderate a discussion on sustainable community development and the future of Noto.

Following the event, attendees are invited to visit the UNU Farmers Market, which will feature products from Noto Peninsula.
