Germany suffers considerably from climate change caused by increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, drought, and storms. Small and medium-sized communities and enterprises face challenges in developing sustainable adaptation strategies to climate change due to a lack of technical expertise and relevant knowledge about the possible ecological and economic impacts of climate change.

The objectives of this project are (i) to develop an integrative and action-oriented approach to evaluate the resilience and capacities of selected communities and enterprises for adaptation to climate change, and (ii) to design stakeholder-differentiated decision support system (DSS) tools for direct use in land management and decision-making practice. With the support of DSS, scenarios of ‘business as usual’ and ‘worst/mean/best case’ of the food value chain will be evaluated in terms of environmental impact as Least Cost Planning. Political, official, and private sector decision-makers are expected to have access to DSS tools for management changes and actions of climate adaptation at the end of the project. Moreover, the methodological knowledge gained and DSS tools shall be transferable to other regions for reducing the negative impacts of natural disasters and strengthening regional development planning.

This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the frame of the funding initiative "Regional Information on Climate Action" (RegIKlim) for a period of three years.
