Ecosystem-Based Approaches for Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate, Land and Biodiversity Goals

This PEDRR/UNU policy brief outlines the role of ecosystem-based approaches in integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate, land, and biodiversity goals. It stresses the alignment of global policy frameworks such as the Rio Conventions (CBD – Convention on Biological Diversity, UNCCD – United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNFCCC – United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR).

Key recommendations include leveraging ecosystem-based solutions to address multiple goals, using integrated spatial planning tools, enhancing scientific collaboration, and exploring diverse financing opportunities. The brief underscores the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and data-driven strategies for effective policy implementation. Examples include the use of biodiversity credits, payments for ecosystem services, and private sector investments in climate resilience.
