Open Source Software as Digital Platforms to Innovate

MAASTRICHT & ONLINE: Our UNU-MERIT Seminar Series team is pleased to announce our upcoming research seminar featuring Dr. Sergio Gabiel Petralia, an Assistant Professor, Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University, The Netherlands.

Time
- Europe/Amsterdam

In this hybrid research seminar on Thursday 22nd May 2025 at 12:00-13:00 CET, Dr. Sergio Gabiel Petralia—an Assistant Professor, Faculty of Geosciences, at Utrecht University, The Netherlands — will present his research titled "Open Source Software as Digital Platforms to Innovate".

Abstract:

This article provides evidence that organizations routinely leverage OSS infrastructure to innovate. It does so by showing that organizations tend to synchronize both activities, based on an analysis of the timing of patent filings and OSS submissions using a novel database that links two decades of contributions to 90 of the most popular OSS projects with patent filings in the United States for 1485 organizations. These organizations represent the 26.9 % of all patents granted and the 42 % of all OSS contributions to these projects over the period. This predominantly takes place in permissively licensed projects and extends beyond contributor-owned or controlled projects.

The zoom link to join the seminar online can be found here. This event is open to the public. All who are interested to this topic are very welcome to join the seminar. After the presentation there will be time for questions and discussion.
