From August 11 to 15, the United Nations University Institute in Macau (UNU Macau), in partnership with the University of Macau, hosted the Training Course on International Leaders in the Global Digital Era and Sustainable Development, welcoming over 20 students from Harbin Engineering University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Beijing University of Technology.
Through lectures, peer exchange and group presentations, students explored how technology and data can address challenges outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while being introduced to the career pathways within the United Nations system.
The program included three specialized sessions led by UNU Macau researchers and staff. Min Yang, researcher, along with Carmen Che, Communications Fellow, and Chloe Ke Li, Communication Assistant, conducted “Approaches to Achieving Sustainable Development,” focusing on the SDGs’ foundations and actionable implementation strategies. “Sustainable Development Goals: Application of Technology and Data,” presented by Ally Nyamawe, researcher, Jia An Liu, research assistant, and Pierre Le Coz, visiting research assistant, introduced tools, datasets, and methodologies for leveraging technological solutions to SDG challenges. A career-focused workshop, led by Louisa Lei, program and administrative services officer, and Cher Yingxue Ye, project assistant, broke down UN recruitment processes and competency expectations, while exposing participants to practical skills such as mock interviews. The final presentations are reviewed and judged by Serge Stinckwich, head of research at UNU Macau.
This initiative equipped participants with the knowledge and tools to translate priorities into actionable, data-driven projects. It also reflects UNU Macau’s ongoing commitment to empowering future leaders through education and digital innovation in support of sustainable development.
