DESCRIPTION
This panel confronts the infrastructure and resource disparities that threaten to leave low-resource regions behind in the AI revolution. While the Global Minority debates the nuances of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), many regions in the Global Majority still struggle with basic internet connectivity and electricity. This session asks a fundamental question: In a world where AI is built by a privileged few, who gets to define the future for the rest? It explores strategies for "leapfrogging" traditional development stages using AI, while acknowledging the severe constraints of low-resource environments.
The panel will discuss "frugal AI"—lightweight models that can run on low-power devices and limited bandwidth. It will highlight the importance of local context; an AI solution designed for a high-tech classroom in Silicon Valley is useless in a rural school in Sub-Saharan Africa. The session will empower local educators and developers, arguing that the future must be built by those who understand the local challenges best. Topics will include open-source initiatives, community-driven data collection, and the necessity of investing in local STEM education to prevent a new form of technological dependency. The goal is to reimagine AI education not as a luxury import, but as a locally grown tool for development.
This session is part of the UNU Macau AI Conference 2026.
