DESCRIPTION
AI tools are becoming increasingly capable of handling cognitive and technical tasks in the workplace. This shift raises a fundamental question for education systems about how to protect the development of foundational skills if their labour-market value declines. The education sector also faces the challenge of rethinking which skills learners should place greater emphasis on developing in the age of AI, and how to respond to uncertainty about how well existing learning and skills outcomes will translate into future work opportunities.
The panel discussion brings together perspectives from academia, labour-market policy, and professional development practice. The discussion explores how education systems should respond to the changing relationship among learning, skills and future work. It examines practices to address emerging learning and development issues such as cognitive offloading. It discusses what reforms to curriculum, pedagogy, and skills-development priorities are viable to better connect new ways of learning with transitions into increasingly AI-mediated work. It also considers what these shifts mean for students making decisions about the skills they develop, for teachers deciding what remains important to teach, and for educational institutions seeking to align learning and skills development with a changing work environment.
