DESCRIPTION
AI in education is frequently framed as a one-way technology transfer from the Global North to the Global Majority, leaving developing nations to simply adapt foreign tools to local contexts. This paradigm risks perpetuating digital dependencies and misaligning AI applications with diverse linguistic, cultural, and pedagogical realities.
This panel shifts the narrative from passive adoption to active, multilateral co-design. Aligning with the conference theme “AI × Education: AI for Learning, Learning for AI,” we explore how Global Majority nations can collaboratively build interoperable, sovereign AI education frameworks. Rather than focusing on isolated classroom use cases or basic digital access, panelists will examine the systemic, cross-border architecture required for equitable AI integration.
Key discussions will address how to establish shared, decolonized data governance standards, foster South-South partnerships for culturally responsive curriculum design, and create policy frameworks that protect educational sovereignty. We will highlight how Global Majority collaborations can pool resources, share open-source educational models, and negotiate collectively on the global stage. Through this lens, we move beyond the binary of 'consumers versus creators' to focus on the collaborative infrastructure that makes sustainable creation possible.
By redefining the traditional 'tech bridge' as a multidirectional network of peer-to-peer collaboration, this session will provide actionable strategies for policymakers, educators, and technologists. Ultimately, it will chart a path for the Global Majority to collectively architect an AI education ecosystem that is locally rooted, globally connected, and fundamentally equitable.
This session is part of the UNU Macau AI Conference 2026.
