Bangladesh frequently experiences a wide range of rapid and slow-onset climate change-induced natural disasters, including floods, cyclones, tidal surges, tornadoes, thunderstorms, river and coastal erosion, landslides, salinity intrusion, hailstorms, and extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, heat waves, and drought conditions. As a result, the country is one of the most disaster-prone in the world, ranking 10th in exposure and 5th in risk among the 15 countries with the highest exposure and risk levels. Despite this vulnerability, Bangladesh has managed to achieve over 6% economic growth annually over the last decade, increase budget revenues, and strengthen financial discipline. These achievements have been made possible through innovative approaches to addressing climate change and disaster management, offering valuable lessons for other countries facing similar challenges.
In this talk, Prof. Islam will elaborate on the innovative strategies to design and implement climate change adaptation projects and operational procedures developed for different scales that contributed to economic and social progress in Bangladesh.
