A Reckoning of Subsidies and Incentives that Impact Socio-Ecological Resilience at the Level of Local Implementation

YEREVAN: This event at CBD COP17 will discuss how subsidies and incentives affect socio-ecological resilience at the local level.

Time
- Asia/Yerevan
Address
Academic and Research Hub, Action Zone, Meridian Exhibition Center, Yerevan, Armenia

On 23 October 2026, UNU-IAS and the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) will co-organize a session at the Academic and Research Hub during the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia. Drawing on perspectives from the private sector, international and non-governmental organizations, the event will examine the impacts of subsidies and incentives at the local implementation level, supporting Target 18 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

The impacts of subsidies and incentives on actors at different implementation levels can be diverse. Understanding the nuances of these impacts across stakeholder groups will help design incentives aligned with the principles of sustainable resource use and equity.

Through presentations and an interactive panel discussion on both positive and negative incentives, the event will explore the constraints and opportunities that different types of subsidies and incentives present for conservation and development outcomes at local scales and discuss ways to collaborate to support the implementation of Target 18.
