Funding for Sustainable Landscape Governance

Address
Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity, Meridian Exhibition Center, Yerevan, Armenia

On 24 October 2026, UNU-IAS will host a workshop at the 7th Science-Policy Forum for Biodiversity during the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia.

Landscape, territorial and bioregional approaches advance socio-ecological resilience by integrating nature conservation and restoration with equity, inclusivity and people's well-being, aligning with the mandates of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and the SDGs. Sustaining these approaches depends on institutions' ability to deliver multi-dimensional goals over the long term, which in turn depends on the level of investment available throughout the landscape or seascape decision-making cycle.

Drawing on empirical evidence from landscape initiatives linked to networks such as the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), the 1000 Landscapes for a Billion People Initiative and the Model Forest Network, this workshop will feature a panel session with practitioners, funders and researchers in landscape approaches. Followed by an interactive discussion on funding gaps and an exploration of how to leverage funding opportunities to strengthen investment orchestration for integrated implementation.

Topics will include:

  • Fixed and variable costs of landscape governance
  • Institutional coordination
  • Cost gaps and minimum viable funding
  • Financing in the context of policy convergence
  • Investment orchestration opportunities
