Towards Understanding the True Cost of Governance in Integrated Landscape Approaches

YEREVAN: This side event at CBD COP17 will discuss the funding gaps and investment challenges in integrated landscape governance.

Address
FAO Pavilion, Meridian Exhibition Center, Yerevan, Armenia

On 28 October 2026, UNU-IAS will host a side event at the FAO Pavilion during the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia. Drawing from empirical evidence from landscape actors across different regions, the event will demonstrate the challenges posed by inadequate investment in landscape governance.

Landscape, territorial and bioregional approaches advance socio-ecological resilience by considering the conservation and restoration of nature alongside equity, inclusivity and people's wellbeing, cutting across the mandates of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and the SDGs. Sustaining these approaches depends on institutions' ability to deliver multidimensional goals over the long term, which in turn depends on the level of investment accessible across a landscape's decision-making cycle.

Drawing on evidence from members of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), the 1000 Landscapes for a Billion People Initiative and the Model Forest Network, the event will show that coordination, facilitation, and the volunteered time and expertise of stakeholders are routinely undervalued. The event will offer lessons for policymakers, donors, academia and practitioners on investment orchestration and enabling conditions for landscape governance.
