On 18 February 2020, UNU-IAS, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, and Global Environment Outreach Centre (GEOC) will co-organise the Symposium on SDGs Localisation through Sports and 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Host Towns.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development acknowledges sport as an important enabler of sustainable development. In the lead-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, this symposium aims to promote actions towards achieving the SDGs through sport, by presenting and discussing local cases from 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Host Towns as well as global trends in sports and sustainability and SDGs localisation cases.
