UNU-EHS and Eurac Research Renew Partnership for GLOMOS Programme (2027–2036)

A renewed UNU-EHS–Eurac partnership secures the next phase of GLOMOS, further advancing research and action for sustainable mountain regions.

United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Eurac Research have agreed to continue and strengthen their collaboration under the joint research programme Global Mountain Safeguard Research (GLOMOS). The renewed agreement marks a major milestone with Eurac’s financial commitment to support the next ten-year phase of the programme (2027–2036).

The partnership will focus on advancing research and knowledge exchange to promote sustainable development, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in mountain regions worldwide. Key areas of cooperation include joint research projects, publications, capacity-building and training, expert exchange, as well as the co-organization of conferences, workshops, and seminars.

“With the renewed agreement, we are strengthening GLOMOS as a key interface between the international mountain research community and the UN system. Our long-standing collaboration with Eurac Research as a reliable partner provides a strong foundation to advance applied and transdisciplinary research. The programme helps bring mountain perspectives into global processes while supporting practical solutions for more resilient and sustainable mountain communities, particularly in the Global South. This agreement is also a testimony of support for the UN system and for the importance of science-based policy interventions in mountain regions,” said Prof. Dr. Shen Xiaomeng, UNU Vice-Rector in Europe & Director of UNU-EHS.

Building on the momentum of this strengthened partnership UNU-EHS and Eurac will explore the establishment of a UNU hub on evidence-based adaptation and knowledge for resilient Himalayan uplands and basins.

The renewed partnership underscores both institutions’ shared commitment to advancing science-based solutions for resilient and sustainable mountain regions worldwide. Under the new agreement, GLOMOS will be led by a single academic officer overseeing two offices in Bonn and Bolzano, further strengthening coordination and impact across both institutions.

“I am very pleased to see this renewed agreement, which provides a strong foundation for the next phase of GLOMOS. It reinforces the close collaboration between our teams in Bonn and Bolzano and strengthens our ability to generate knowledge that supports practical solutions for mountain regions worldwide,” said Stefan Schneiderbauer, Head of the GLOMOS Programme.
