The SDG Monitor is a tool to support local authorities in translating the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into local action. It provides detailed information on each municipality, based on more than 200 indicators that offer insight into progress on sustainable development. These indicators are based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass a wide range of aspects of sustainability, including people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships.
The new update includes not only updated figures but also additional functionalities to give local authorities better insight into how to interpret them. For instance, you can now view the indicators behind the scores directly in the tool. Together with the SDG quadrant, these are new tools for local authorities to implement data-driven policy.
The SDG Monitor allows you to track the progress of the SDGs in your municipality in a data-driven way. Thanks to the scores, graphs, and underlying indicators, you quickly gain substantiated insight into the key trends.
The monitor can help you to:
- Progress on the SDGs: The monitor provides insight into how well a municipality performs on each of the 17 SDGs. Through scores and indicators, you can see how far the municipality has progressed in achieving the set goals.
- Comparison with other municipalities, a comparable Belfius cluster, province & Flanders: Local authorities can compare their performance with various benchmarks. This enables them to see where they perform relatively well and where there is room for improvement.
- Evolution over time: By tracking scores and indicators over the years, municipalities can identify trends. They can see whether they are making progress on the SDGs or if there are areas where progress is stagnating or regressing.
- Identification of priorities: Municipalities can use the information from the SDG Monitor to identify priorities where extra efforts are needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This can help determine policy measures and allocate resources.
The SDG Monitor offers valuable insights not only for local governments but also for other stakeholders such as advisory councils, volunteer organisations, and citizens. It enables them to:
- To track societal evolutions and changes and map them in handy graphs.
- To support policy with the necessary figures and analyses, which can lead to more data-driven and effective policy.
- To collaborate on sustainability and social change by sharing data and identifying best practices.
In short, the SDG Monitor is a powerful tool that helps municipalities and other stakeholders promote sustainable development at the local level by providing insight, enabling comparisons, and identifying priority areas for targeted action.
