Climate‑induced risks – such as resource scarcity, migration and environmental stress – are increasingly interwoven with security dynamics and could introduce setbacks or obstacles to peacebuilding and peacekeeping efforts. However, United Nations Country Teams, peacekeeping missions and other operational partners have increasingly been working with governmental and non-governmental partners, and regional and sub-regional organizations, to develop strategies that address both the environmental and security challenges facing many communities.
This report, developed by UNU-CPR for the UN Climate Security Mechanism (CSM), focuses on one set of efforts – a new strategy of deploying field-based Climate, Peace and Security Advisors (CPSAs) and other CSM-supported initiatives in field settings to broaden and scale up integrated climate‑security responses. Drawing on experiences from some of the world’s most climate-vulnerable and conflict-affected contexts – including Afghanistan, Haiti, Pacific Island states, Somalia, and South Sudan – the report considers lessons learned and emerging programmatic and operational approaches for responding to climate, peace and security challenges.
