Global value chains have contributed to economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction across low- and middle-income countries. Yet participation in global markets alone may no longer be enough to sustain development. As the global economy changes, firms and workers also need opportunities to move towards higher-value and more resilient activities.
The Asian Development Policy Report 2026 addresses this challenge and considers how global value chains can support more inclusive and sustainable development. The report looks at the role of industrial policy, technological innovation and regional cooperation in helping economies strengthen their position within global production networks.
Join us at UNU-MERIT for a presentation of the report’s key findings by Neil Foster-McGregor, followed by a panel discussion with Bart Verspagen, Fiona Tregenna and Carlo Pietrobelli. Moderated by Tommaso Ciarli, the discussion will connect the report’s findings with wider debates on industrial policy, technological upgrading and structural change.
The event is open to researchers, students, policymakers and others interested in the changing role of global value chains in development.
