AI & Law: Risks, Highlights, Education and the MAIA-Tool (Brazil-India-South Africa)

MGM Macau, Salon 1&2

Time
- Asia/Macau

DESCRIPTION

The legal profession is undergoing a massive transformation due to AI, and law schools must adapt rapidly. This panel, referencing "MAIA" (a specific initiative or framework for Machine Artificial Intelligence, specifically LLM in Law in Brazil), focuses on the integration of AI into legal education. It addresses the dual challenge of teaching law about AI (regulation, liability, IP) and teaching law with AI (using tools for legal research, contract analysis, and prediction).

The session will explore how the definition of a "competent lawyer" is changing. Future lawyers need to be "legal engineers" who understand how algorithms work, not just how statutes are written. The panel will discuss the ethical implications of using AI in legal practice, such as the risk of automating bias in sentencing or hiring. It will also look at the pedagogical methods being used to train the next generation of legal professionals, moving away from the Socratic method alone toward simulation-based learning with AI tools. By examining the MAIA framework, the panel aims to provide a roadmap for law schools to modernize their curricula, ensuring graduates are prepared for a profession where human advocacy and machine efficiency must coexist.
