Joel Mburu Kuria is a visiting research assistant at the United Nations University Institute in Macau. 

Prior to joining UNU-Macau, He was a research assistant at African Population and health research center (APHRC) in Kenya. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Political Science from The University of Nairobi. He has also trained in different fields, especially in qualitative data analysis, Demographic Surveillance Systems, GIS and Agent-based modelling.

His research focuses mainly on Health and informing policies through research to drive to make a difference in vulnerable populations. His experience is in community-based work with expertise in mixed methods, especially qualitative research methods.  He has been working with vulnerable populations and engaging with various stakeholders including policymakers and other partner organizations.

Currently, He is working on the Citizen Science Project which is a co-creation of models that aim to increase knowledge, build trust, and develop strategies toward public health challenges; He is part of the team developing Agent-Based Models and Role-playing games on pandemic preparedness. He is highly motivated to use multidisciplinary approaches in the understanding of health phenomena and Demographic Behaviour.
