Dr. Reem Abu Shomar is a water and public health expert specializing in water safety, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in conflict-affected settings.  

As the Water and Public Health in Conflict Zones Research Fellow at UNU-INWEH, Dr. Abu Shomar focuses on the intersection of water, health, and the environment, emphasizing sustainable, rights-based, and evidence-driven interventions for communities impacted by conflicts.

Dr. Abu Shomar has extensive experience working with national and international organizations in Gaza, Palestine. Her expertise spans multidisciplinary research on water quality, public health, and gender-responsive strategies in humanitarian contexts. She has also led multi-stakeholder initiatives and programs aimed at strengthening WASH and public health resilience through capacity-building activities, policy advice, and baseline studies.  

She holds a Ph.D. in Water Technology and a Master of Public Health.
