UNU-IAS at HLPF 2023

UNU-IAS will be contributing to this year's HLPF through side events, expert presentations, and policy engagement.

During 10–19 July 2023, UNU-IAS will be engaged in the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The HLPF is the core UN platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The theme of the 2023 forum will be “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”.

Implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework through the Satoyama Initiative/COMDEKS 4

This online side event will explore the role of local action and partnerships for ecosystem restoration. Experts and local practitioners will share diverse insights, knowledge, and experiences relevant to practical implementation of the new global biodiversity framework. Participants will explore different ways of scaling up and mainstreaming effective approaches into global and national policy.

Sustainable COVID-19 Recovery in a Multi-Risk Setting

Organised by the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), this online side event will draw lessons from COVID-19 recovery efforts around the world, to better understand, assess and manage systemic recovery. It aims to address the systemic nature of risk and recovery, acknowledging that the impacts of the pandemic reach across sectors and SDGs. UNU-IAS expert Mahesti Okitasari will present insights from the institute's research on strategies for sustainable and resilient recovery.

Fourth Climate & SDGs Synergy Conference
16 July 2023, 10:00–16:45 EDT
IN-PERSON: UN headquarters, New York

This conference, held in association with the 2023 HLPF, will take stock of progress on synergistic action on sustainable development and climate change. It will discuss key findings of the Expert Group on Climate and SDG Synergies, and how various stakeholders are progressing in delivering jointly on these two agendas to transition towards just, equitable, and climate compatible pathways. UNU-IAS will provide expert contributions to Parallel Session 1, on the topic “A Just, Equitable, and Net-Zero Transition — How to Get It Right?” The conference is convened by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
