Nidhi Nagabhatla delivered lecture on AI's environmental impact

The spectrum of the talk was connecting AI, Disinformation, Environmental Impacts and Intercultural Leadership.

The 2026 International University for Intercultural Leadership (from 19 until 25 July 2026), with its focus on “Hate Speech, Antisemitism, and Racism in the Age of AI-Empowered Disinformation,” provided an important platform for examining the wider societal implications of rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technologies.


Dr Nidhi Nagabhatla’s lecture added a complementary dimension to this discussion by drawing attention to the environmental and resource implications of AI, particularly the energy, water and material demands associated with the development and operation of increasingly intensive AI systems. This perspective highlights that the consequences of AI are not limited to information integrity, social cohesion and democratic discourse; they also extend to climate change, resource security and environmental sustainability.


The intersection of these themes opens an important space for interdisciplinary dialogue around: AI and environmental sustainability – examining the energy, water and material footprints associated with AI infrastructure and data centres. AI, climate change and resource security – considering how growing digital infrastructures interact with water, energy and land systems, particularly in regions already experiencing environmental stress.


AI-enabled disinformation and climate narratives – exploring how artificial intelligence can amplify misinformation, polarisation and manipulation around climate change, environmental risks and public policy.


Environmental justice and digital inequality – asking who benefits from AI innovation, who bears its environmental costs, and how these impacts are distributed across regions and communities.
 

Responsible and sustainable AI governance – advancing approaches that consider not only ethical and social risks but also the environmental footprint and resource requirements of AI technologies.
 

Intercultural and intergenerational perspectives – bringing diverse knowledge systems and community perspectives into discussions on how AI should be developed and governed.
Science, policy and public trust – strengthening the interface between scientific evidence, technology, policymaking and public communication in an era where AI can both support and undermine informed decision-making.
 

This broader framing was particularly relevant to intercultural leadership because the governance of AI cannot be separated from questions of equity, environmental responsibility, human rights, social cohesion, regional and global cooperation.

The discussion, therefore, provides an opportunity to move beyond viewing AI only as a technological innovation or a tool for information manipulation, and instead consider AI as part of a wider social–ecological system. It was anticipated that this lecture, understanding its environmental footprint alongside its implications for information ecosystems, intercultural relations, and public trust, can contribute to a more holistic framework for responsible AI governance, highlighting such an approach could also create opportunities for collaboration between academia, policymakers, technology communities and civil society to ensure that AI development contributes to sustainable development rather than reproducing existing environmental and social inequalities.
