UNU-CPR Director David Passarelli spoke with CGTN America about the UN's response to global challenges in an increasingly dynamic world as world leaders gathered for the Summit of the Future.
Passarelli noted the international community's increased appreciation for the importance of multilateralism over the past three years following the UN's 75th anniversary in 2020, which identified 12 areas of action to be addressed through a reinvigorated multilateralism that is inclusive, networked and effective.
Passarelli also addressed the bold advocacy efforts led by the Secretary-General and global institutions, including the IMF and World Bank, to reform international financial systems and better serve the global community, particularly in the Global South.
Passarelli stressed that the rapid advancement of digital technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, demands a robust global governance framework to address infrastructure, financial and capacity gaps, ensuring equitable access for all.
He pointed to ongoing efforts, including the formation of the Secretary-General's High-Level Advisory Board on AI, with UNU-CPR's Eleonore Fournier-Tombs serving as lead researcher. The Board's Final Report, "Governing AI for Humanity”, builds on months of extensive global consultations and provides a blueprint for mitigating AI-related risks while harnessing its transformative potential for global benefit.
Passarelli also emphasized increasing international efforts to regulate cross-border data collection, analysis and sharing as an important driver of economic development.
