Note of Appreciation to Dr. Gustavo Fermin

Recognizing a tenure marked by institutional revitalization, regional collaboration, and academic excellence.

As 2026 marks the conclusion of Dr. Gustavo Fermin's four-year tenure as UNU-BIOLAC's Programme Head, we wish to express our sincere gratitude for his leadership and commitment to the advancement of the Institution's objectives.
Dr. Fermin assumed leadership during challenging times. Following a period of reduced activity, further exacerbated by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Programme required renewed momentum and strategic direction. Under his guidance, UNU-BIOLAC experienced a significant revitalization that restored dynamism to its academic mission and strengthened its role as a platform for scientific cooperation across Latin America and the Caribbean.
A defining feature of his tenure was the concerted effort to increase the Program's visibility. Through sustained outreach and engagement, UNU-BIOLAC fostered renewed interest among partners and stakeholders, attracting the participation of institutions that had previously had limited interaction with the Programme and expanding collaboration to countries that had never before been represented in its activities. This broadening of the Program's reach has contributed to a more diverse and inclusive regional network.
These efforts were accompanied by a remarkable increase in academic output. The expansion of training activities and collaborative initiatives helped generate new opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity development throughout the region. As a result, UNU-BIOLAC strengthened its contribution to scientific advancement and human resource development in the life sciences.
Equally important was Dr. Fermin's determination to address several legal and administrative matters that had long been overdue. Through his efforts to update and formalize key institutional frameworks, the Programme is now better positioned to establish transparent, accountable, and sustainable relationships with its partners. This work has laid the foundation for stronger collaboration with emerging institutions across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as with the long-standing partners whose academic excellence and commitment have been fundamental to UNU-BIOLAC's history and success.
Beyond these achievements, we are especially grateful for Dr. Fermin's unwavering recognition of the collective nature of institutional progress. He has consistently emphasized that "no one makes it alone" and has never failed to acknowledge the contributions of the many individuals who worked alongside him. His commitment to publicly recognizing and valuing the efforts of the UNU-BIOLAC team fostered a spirit of respect, collaboration, and shared purpose that has been instrumental in achieving these accomplishments.
On behalf of UNU-BIOLAC, we extend our deepest thanks to Dr. Gustavo Fermin for his leadership, vision, and service. The Programme is stronger today because of his dedication, and the foundations established during his tenure will continue to support scientific cooperation, academic excellence, and regional development for years to come.
We wish him every success in his future endeavors and look forward to the continued impact of his contributions to science, higher education, and sustainable development in our region.
