In this hybrid research seminar on Thursday 5th December 2024 at 12:00-13:00 CET, Francesco Lissoni (Université de Bordeaux) will present his research (co-authored with Andriy Romanyuk) titled "Stay rates and careers of foreign doctorate recipients from Dutch universities: A bibliometric analysis".
Abstract:
Based on an original dataset combining doctoral theses and scientific publications, we investigate the scientific careers and cross-country mobility of native and foreign-born STEM doctoral graduates of Dutch universities, from 2000 to 2020. After controlling for composition effects, native and foreign born graduates appear to have the same probability to publish after graduating, with the latter being more productive. Conditional on publishing, foreign-born graduates are 10% to 17% less likely than natives to do so in the Netherlands. When publishing from abroad, foreign-born graduates are evenly split between those publishing from their home countries and those from other European or English speaking countries, with the latter group more likely to include graduates who had a pre-graduation publishing record. Almost all the native graduates who publish outside the Netherlands do so in other European or English-speaking countries, and are similarly positively self-selected. Stay rates for both foreign-born and native graduates do not exhibit any clear trend. The introduction of ”knowledge migrant” (kenninsmigranten) visa in 2004 and its subsequent reforms do not appear to have affected them.
