Dr. Amin Dezfuli is an atmospheric scientist investigating the physical mechanisms behind regional weather and climate extremes—and how these events impact people and ecosystems.

As an Associate Research Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and Climatology at UNU-INWEH, he contributes to interdisciplinary research and education on the societal impacts of weather and climate phenomena.

His work integrates physical climate modeling with innovative data analysis to better understand the drivers of extreme precipitation events, droughts, floods, wildfires, dust storms, and aerosol–precipitation interactions. Using climate models, he simulates "what-if" scenarios to assess the contributions of different components of the Earth system to extreme events.

Dr. Dezfuli’s research extends to the climate–ecosystem–health nexus, exploring how environmental changes influence human health and bird migration patterns—particularly their implications for the spread of avian-borne diseases.

He also serves as a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Dezfuli's scientific contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the NASA Robert H. Goddard Honor Award for Scientific Achievement.
