Alexandra retired from Global Affairs Canada after a 39-year career that included postings to Ghana and Guatemala, and four Ambassadorial appointments; Syria (1997-2000), Cuba (2003-2007), Poland (2013-2015) and Italy (2017-2021).
In Canada, she served in a number of senior executive positions including as the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) for Latin America and as ADM for Europe, the Middle East and the Arctic. As Chief Negotiator, she successfully concluded the first Canada-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement. Alexandra was a Diplomat in Residence at the Norman Patterson School of International Relations when she co-edited the book “Canada and Mexico’s Unfinished Agenda”. Alexandra has received awards and citations for her contributions to the Namibian independence process; the 2010 Haitian earthquake recovery effort, the 2001 Summit of the Americas in Quebec, and the Syrian resettlement process in Canada.
From 2017 to 2021 Alexandra served as Canada’s Permanent Representative to the UN Agencies in Rome (FAO, WFP and IFAD). As a member of their Executive Boards, she was active in raising awareness and increasing funding to address the critical impact of climate change on food security. She also chaired the first Informal Group of Friends of Indigenous Peoples at the FAO and successfully advocated for indigenous people’s and women’s issues at the 2021 World Food Summit.
