On 19 June 2014 UNU-IAS held a Reporting Workshop on the Global Leadership Training Programme in Africa (GLTP), a practical training initiative which provides Japanese postgraduate students with opportunities to conduct internships in Africa. At the workshop, six students who had carried out field research during 2013 at universities and research institutes in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia presented their work and results.
The students' research topics included climate change, CO2 emission reduction measures, the functions of study discussions in secondary schools, and a business model comparison of cellular networks. At the workshop they shared their experiences from the field, including a slum area and a platinum mine. More than 30 participants, including many students interested in Africa, learned about the GLTP initiative and engaged actively in a question and answer session.
The aim of GLTP is to train global leaders who can contribute to solving various challenges in Africa. UNU-IAS has developed this practical training programme, through which Japanese postgraduate students can take internships at partner universities and research institutions in Africa. UNU-IAS arranges internships for the postgraduate students (two on a long-term basis and eight on a short-term basis) at partner universities and research institutions in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Zambia, to acquire practical skills, knowledge, and experience.

Students of the 2014 GLTP programme are already working in the field. Applications are still open, since the programme started earlier this year.
