During 7–19 December 2022, UNU-IAS will be contributing to the UN Biodiversity Conference held in Montreal, Canada, consisting of the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 15) and a number of related conferences, meetings, and events.

The Satoyama Initiative: A Decade of Working for Societies in Harmony with Nature
7 December, 13:15–14:15 EST
Venue: Room 516DE (Contact Group 6)
This side event will present the results of the first ten years of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), a global effort to realise societies in harmony with nature through landscape approaches. To celebrate the first decade of the initiative, the event will bring together experts from the IPSI community to discuss successes to date and future plans.
Exploring Nature-Positive Pathways
8 December, 18:15–19:15 EST
Venue: IGOs Meeting Room 514B
This side event will explore the whole-of-society approach to biodiversity governance as essential for realising transformative change. It will discuss the findings of a new report “Exploring Nature-Positive Pathways” with representatives from municipalities, the private sector, and the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI).
14 December, 13:15–14:15 EST
Venue: Meeting Room 512E
This side event will discuss how mangrove ecosystem conservation can address multiple challenges in coastal areas, and share relevant government policies and implementation activities by donors and private companies. It will identify challenges and opportunities for mangrove conservation as a nature-based solution (NbS) to accelerate restoration and ensure sustainable management to achieve the targets of post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

Venue: Business and Industry Organizations Meeting Room 514A
This side event will focus on the roles of local actions and partnerships in landscape and seascape approaches to ecosystem restoration, including a number of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs), for the promotion of sustainable development in a socially inclusive and effective manner. It will launch the fourth phase of the Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative (COMDEKS), highlighting the relevance of the Satoyama Initiative to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and the initiative’s contributions to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
