Treaty Negotiations to End Plastic Pollution

An article in Down To Earth reviews the progress of international negotiations to develop a binding agreement on tackling plastic pollution.

On 28 October 2024, Down To Earth, a magazine based in India reporting on science and the environment, published an editorial piece by Anupam Khajuria (Research Fellow and Academic Associate, UNU-IAS) and Nana Zhao (Assistant Director, Basel Convention Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific). The article discusses the progress of international treaty negotiations aiming to build a framework to end plastic waste.

The piece calls for the treaty to provide financial and technical support to help countries fulfil their commitments to reducing plastic pollution. It notes that as the final stages of the negotiations approach, hopes remain high for a robust and enforceable international agreement that will pave the way for a plastic pollution-free future.

Excerpt:

Through global cooperation and committed action, the world is working to turn the tide on plastic waste and protect the environment for future generations. INC-5 will be instrumental in shaping the final treaty, with the global community urged to advocate for strong and effective measures to address the root causes of plastic pollution.
