UNU-IAS will co-organize a thematic track session of the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) 2026, exploring how effective socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) management enhances biodiversity and supports recognition of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs). Featuring implementers and government representatives of the Satoyama Development Mechanism (SDM) project, the session will highlight achievements, share practical lessons and provide insights for advancing OECMs and sustainable biodiversity management.
Achieving Target 3 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) requires expanding effectively conserved areas through both protected areas and OECMs. Unlike top-down protected areas, OECMs rely heavily on local initiatives, traditional knowledge and sustainable resource management. In this context, SEPLS, promoted globally under the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative, offer a key landscape approach to balance biodiversity conservation and human well-being.
