How can we measure and compare national performance in managing water, energy, and food resources?
Dr. Gareth Simpson is WSP’s National Executive for Mine Closure in Australia, where he leads a multidisciplinary team of closure planners, engineers, and project managers. With over two decades of experience in integrated engineering and environmental projects across mining, energy, and water sectors, Dr. Simpson has been at the forefront of advancing systems-based approaches to sustainability. His PhD focused on integrated resource planning, management, and security.
In this seminar, Dr. Simpson will introduce the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus Index, a national-level composite indicator built on 21 key indicators. He will discuss how the Index was developed, its applications to date, and opportunities for future improvements. The online platform www.wefnexusindex.org provides a user-friendly interface to explore the data and insights that underpin the index’s structure—covering the pillars of water, energy, and food, along with their access and availability dimensions.
The Nexus Seminar Series is coordinated by Prof. Serena Coetzee and Prof. Samanthi Dijkstra-Silva as part of the course Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Sustainability (the Nexus Approach), jointly offered by UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden.
