The United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) has entered a new chapter in its institutional journey with the announcement that its short form will transition from UNU-FLORES to UNU Resource Nexus.
The announcement was made by the Rector of the United Nations University, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, during a ceremony in Dresden honouring the leadership and contributions of the outgoing Director, Prof. Edeltraud Guenther. The Rector also announced that Prof. Daniel Karthe will assume the role of Director, ushering in a new phase of leadership for the Institute.
The new short form more clearly reflects the Institute's scientific identity and strategic focus. Rather than deriving its identity from an abbreviation of its formal name, UNU Resource Nexus speaks directly to the Institute's longstanding mission of advancing integrated approaches to the sustainable management of natural resources. The Resource Nexus has always been at the heart of the Institute's work.
While the Institute's short form is changing, its mandate and mission remain unchanged. UNU Resource Nexus will continue to deliver interdisciplinary research, education and policy engagement that promote integrated approaches to resource governance and support countries in addressing complex sustainability challenges.
The transition also forms part of a broader initiative across the United Nations University, with several institutes adopting names that more clearly reflect their areas of expertise and strengthen the visibility of their contributions across the UNU system.
